Frostfire Mage

The ultimate Pyromancer-Cryomancer hybrid. Flash Freeze combines burning and freezing for devastating elemental combos.

Overview

The Frostfire Mage is the signature hybrid build of the 1.22 Expertise system. Flash Freeze is the keystone: freeze a burning enemy to consume all burns for 2.5x burst damage, or burn a frozen enemy for 2x burn tick damage. This creates a devastating cycle where fire and ice amplify each other exponentially. It requires investment in both Pyromancer and Cryomancer but rewards skilled play with the highest damage potential in the game.

Core Skills (Priority Order)

  1. Flash Freeze (Legendary, S) - THE build-defining skill. Burn+Freeze = 2.5x burst. Freeze+Burn = 2x tick.
  2. Spreading Flames (Legendary, S) - Burns spread to all enemies. Essential for AoE.
  3. Ice Mastery (Legendary, S) - Ice damage +40%.
  4. Permafrost (Legendary, A) - Frozen enemies take +25% damage. Freeze → Slow on expiry.
  5. Glacial Storm (Mythic, S+) - Cryomancer capstone. 2 Ice per round, slow bonus damage.
  6. Meltdown (Mythic, S+) - Pyromancer capstone. AoE fireball + burn boost.
  7. Flashfire (Mythic, S) - Burns deal 3x damage but expire. Perfect with Flash Freeze consuming burns.

Supporting Skills

  • Fire Volley (Common) - Cast fire every round for burn application.
  • Ice Volley (Common) - Cast ice every round for freeze application.
  • Kindled Spirit (Common) - Bonus damage to burning enemies.
  • Winter’s Bite (Common) - Bonus damage to frozen enemies.
  • Cauterize (Legendary, A) - Burn/bleed resistance + enemy healing reduction.
  • Cryotherapy (Legendary, A) - Ice attacks heal you.

Expertise Path

Split between Pyromancer and Cryomancer. Flash Freeze gives both tags. Fire Volley, Spreading Flames, Kindled Spirit give Pyromancer. Ice Volley, Ice Mastery, Permafrost give Cryomancer. At 5 in each, both capstones unlock.

The Frostfire Combo

The core loop:

  1. Apply burns via Fire Volley / Spreading Flames
  2. Burns spread to all enemies
  3. Glacial Storm freezes burning enemies → Flash Freeze consumes burns for 2.5x burst
  4. Permafrost makes frozen enemies take +25% extra damage
  5. Meltdown charges and detonates for AoE on top of everything

With Flashfire (3x burn damage), the burns being consumed by Flash Freeze deal 3x * 2.5x = 7.5x effective damage on the freeze burst.

Strategy Tips

  • Flash Freeze is everything. Without it, you’re just running two half-builds.
  • Flashfire + Flash Freeze is the ultimate combo: burns expire anyway with Flashfire, so consuming them for 2.5x burst is pure bonus.
  • This build needs more skill investment than any pure build. It takes longer to come online.
  • The payoff is unmatched: simultaneous AoE burning + freeze control + burst damage.
  • In Raids, fire handles AoE waves while ice handles crowd control on bosses. Flash Freeze bridges both.

Tier Rating: B

Looks amazing on paper but struggles in practice. The dual-expertise requirement (5 Pyromancer + 5 Cryomancer) means this build takes forever to come online, and by the time it does, pure builds have already scaled past it. Flash Freeze combo is satisfying but inconsistent — you need both burn AND freeze active simultaneously, which doesn’t always line up. Fun to play but not competitive with focused single-expertise builds.
